Why does anything feel like anything at all?
We know how the brain processes light into sight, or sound into hearing. That part has been largely mapped, thanks to the longstanding field of neuroscience. The real mystery though? Why is any of it accompanied by experience at all, why there's something it's like to be you reading these words instead of information processing happening in the dark. Issue II steps back from case studies to name the question underneath them: the hard problem of consciousness. I give you a map of the major camps trying to answer it, and an introduction to phenomenology, the discipline that treats our inner experience as data worth taking seriously.
Since Issue I asked what to do with the people who came back, I wanted Issue to name the problem their stories point to, and marks the territories the rest of this series will explore.
