The Curiouser – Volume I, Issue V (October 2026)

What if the brain isn’t producing consciousness, but narrowing it?

In Issue V, we stay within the Mechanist Citadel’s borders but slip through a door most of its residents walk past without a second glance. Below ground, spread across five levels, are the thinkers who looked at the production model and asked whether the arrow points the other way. Together, they build the case for the filter hypothesis, the proposal that the brain is an organ of selection, narrowing a vast field of awareness down to the trickle we need to stay alive. Before you ask, no, we haven’t wandered off into mysticism. This is a different scientific model for the very same data, and a testable one.

After four issues of watching the Citadel’s best frameworks arrive at the same wall, Issue V asks whether the problem was ever the wall, or the direction we were facing.
